I would like a particular letter combination that I have set as a shortcut to appear without expanding

With some applications you may revert back to the original letter combination after it has been expanded by pressing CTRL+Z. There are however some applications that will not do this, and instead will simply delete the text. It is for this reason we recommend you use un-common letter combinations as your shortcuts.
One work around for applications that do not respond to CRTL+Z is as follows:

Type the letter combination except for the very last letter.
Press the Space Bar
Use the mouse or arrow keys to move the cursor back to the end of the letter combination
Type the last letter of the combination
Use the mouse or arrow keys to move the cursor forward past the space that is after the letter combination
You should then be able to continue typing.
